When the Italian fascist regime wants to get an anti-fascist intellectual (Gian Maria Volantè) out of its way, it sends him to internal exile in a hilltop town in deepest Southern Italy. Over the course of director Francesco Rosi’s quiet epic, the outsider becomes a part of the community as he – and the viewer – come to understand and appreciate people who are, in their own way, even more isolated from the world than he is. The film travels at a meditative pace, but is well worth the journey.

1979 Dir. Francesco Rosi. 1.33:1 Color dcp 220 min. In Italian with English subtitles.
