Wong Kar-wai became unmistakably himself with his second feature. While he still sticks in some half-hearted crime business, Days of Being Wild languishes in inchoate and ineffable desires, as Leslie Cheung’s troubled playboy toys with women (Maggie Cheung and Carina Lau) and obsesses over his own lost biological mother in 1960s Hong Kong. With cinematographer Christopher Doyle on board for the first of their seven collaborations together, Wong finds the expressionistic visual language to match his intuitive style.
1990 Dir. Wong Kar-wai. 1.85:1 Color DCP 94 min. In Cantonese with English subtitles.
