Ingmar Bergman tries his hand at horror. Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman play a painter and his wife who head for a remote island for an extended summer getaway. The folks who live in the castle on the other side of the island are odd, but not as odd as what’s going on in Von Sydow’s slowly disintegrating mind. While Bergman has fun with some traditional horror tropes, Hour of the Wolf shows that the style of a film like Persona needs just a nudge to tip into the feeling of an actual nightmare. Regular Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist’s moody cinematography is particularly gorgeous here.
