Fellini’s international breakthrough balanced the grit of Italian neorealism with the elemental simplicity of a fairytale or fable. A brutish carnival strongman (Anthony Quinn) dragoons an innocent waif (Fellini’s gamine wife and muse Giulietta Masina) into becoming his assistant/drudge, mistreating her terribly but never quite breaking her spirit until a fellow traveling performer (Richard Basehart) gives her a glimpse of a different life. La Strada established “Felliniesque” as a thing overnight, and Masina’s Chaplinesque performance still astonishes. 1954 Dir. Federico Fellini. 1.33:1 B&W DCP 108 min. In Italian with English subtitles.
