(1970 Jean-Pierre Melville) Think of Jean-Pierre Melville’s slow-burner as the Gallic Heat. Fate brings together an ex-con (Alain Delon) and an escaped prisoner (Gian Maria Volonté)—might as well recruit an alcoholic ex-cop (Yves Montand) and pull an elaborate jewel heist. But old underworld rivalries flare up, and an obsessed detective (André Bourvil) with no personal life except three floofy cats stalks their every move. While the wordless half-hour burglary sequence is the highlight, hard-boiled pleasures abound throughout. The apotheosis of Melville’s crime films, and that’s saying something.
