A Hen in the Wind

Not your usual Ozu film. A single mother (Kinuyo Tanaka) is forced into sex work briefly to help her sick child while she waits for her husband (Shūji Sano) to return from the war. When he finally makes it home, he can’t accept that she had no other choice. There’s plenty of quiet despair here, but also some of the loud kind, and a more raw feel than the master’s later work. -LG
