One of the scant handful of war films that can’t be said to glamorize war. Elem Klimov’s masterful epic follows a young Belarussian farmboy (Aleksei Kravchenko) as he joins the partisans fighting the Nazi invasion of his country during World War II. There are no big battle scenes, no bonhomie, just a panorama of violence and horror worthy of Bosch, metaphorically reflected in the wide eyes of Kravchenko, the ancestral embodiment of the how it started/how it’s going meme. -LG
