Imagine if a woman making films in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s wanted to make a film satirizing the way women in a Communist country (and elsewhere) were expected to behave and still get it seen. Věra Chytilová succeeded marvelously, putting manic pixies Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová into a series of absurd scenarios that amuse and perplex by turns. A funtastic feminist classic.
