Technicolor noir should be an oxymoron, but Niagara earns its shadowy bonafides. A mentally troubled veteran (Joseph Cotten) and his bored young wife (Marilyn Monroe in an early role) are coming apart in a motel overlooking the title falls. The honeymooners next door (Jean Peters and Max Showalter) get dragged into the drama, which soon involves a murder. Director Henry Hathaway was a journeyman but plays over his head here, using the epic vistas to imbue the twisty plot with the drama and tension of mid-period Hitchcock.
