Nightmare Alley (1947)

The only thing Guillermo Del Toro’s lavish 2022 version of William Lindsey Gresham’s novel really has over Edmund Goulding’s 1947 first pass is an extra 40 minutes. A lowly carny on the make (Tyrone Power) stumbles onto a psychic scam that enables his rise. As he takes on posher gigs—and, with the help of an unscrupulous psychiatrist (Helen Walker), richer marks—he risks more and more of his soul. Black and white is just right for this lurid, twisty meditation on ethics and fate. -LG
