Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis

Images and themes from Fritz Lang’s 1927 Metropolis have been popping up in anime for so long that an animated adaptation of Katsushira Otomo’s manga based on the story was inevitable. In a futuristic city, the ruler creates an AI-powered robot girl to further his infernal ends, but a plucky hero may have something to say about that. The storytelling meanders, but the visuals never disappoint. – Lee Gardner
