René Clément’s sun-kissed version of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley is as cool as the other side of the pillow. The exquisite Alain Delon plays Ripley with a casual, almost innocent air, so it’s surprisingly easy to root for him when he murders a wealthy pal (Maurice Ronet) and assumes his identity for luxe adventures along the Riviera. The 1999 American film version is a country cousin at best to this genteel thriller. -LG
