A relic from that bygone cultural moment when resisting fascists was jaunty fun. Journeyman director John Sturges’s World War II epic pits British and American POWs against the surprisingly sympathetic Germans minding a prison camp in an elaborate illustration of Allied ingenuity and grit. Steve McQueen stars in an entirely different film from everyone else as The Coolest Guy in the European Theater, complete with more motorcycle footage than is strictly necessary.
