An elegy for a type of mid-century America that director Peter Bogdanovich and his New Hollywood cohorts both rhapsodized and helped kill off for good. The three youths at the heart of this coming-of-age tale (Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, and Cybill Shepherd) don’t so much discover sex and betrayal and disappointment in their dead-end Texas town as they inherit them, like their elders’ pickup trucks and country-club memberships. Perfect script, perfect cast, perfect performances, perfect direction. Just perfect. -Lee Gardner
