A Black man (Marlo Montes) is screwed over by The Man and imprisoned—we’ve seen this movie before. But unless you’ve seen Welcome Home Brother Charles, you’ve never, ever seen it play out this way. Jamaa Fanaka’s underseen curio emerged from the tail end of the blaxploitation era, but it’s much stranger and more vicious than its stack-heeled cousins. It wouldn’t do to spoil how Charles gets his revenge, but it’s not a Black planet that whitey should be afraid of. -Lee Gardner
