Based on the unlikely premise that a man doesn’t want to have a baby with Anna Karina, Jean-Luc Godard’s first color film is soufflé-light but wicked smart. The director manages to make a ‘60s romantic comedy and an exploded drawing of one at the same time, playing with sound, music, dialogue, the fourth wall, credits, and other cinematic components to dazzling effect. A perfect place to start for the Godard-curious too. -Lee Gardner
