John Boorman was left out of Peter Biskind’s canon-setting book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, but there’s an argument to be made that the New Hollywood began here. Boorman’s adaptation of Richard Stark’s hardboiled fiction infuses a classic noir tale with existential fatalism and downright experimental techniques.
