CONVERSATION PIECE The Leopard director Luchino Visconti reteams with its star Burt Lancaster for another tale of an old-school gentleman confronting a new age. A crass bougie gaggle (led by Sillivana Mangano and Helmut Berger) browbeat Lancaster’s oldmoney scholar into renting them rooms, whereupon they upend his life. But this is no wacky comedy. Director and cast hit notes of pathos and ambiguity that evoke tragedy more than farce.
